Creator: Shonda Rhimes Stars: Viola Davis, Alfred Enoch, Billy Brown Genre: Drama, Crime, Mystery
This show has no equal. Giving the audience only a glimpse into the past at ever turn, How to Get Away with Murder is my drug of choice. The brilliance of its design is slipping just enough information to entice you and then a little more, then a little more, and so on. It is a craving you cannot get rid of, not that you want to. Good thing Netflix has season one ready for us to consume.
Creator: Jonathan Nolan Stars: Jim Caviezel, Taraji P. Henson, Kevin Chapman, Micheal Emerson Genres: Action, Drama, Mystery
From the brilliant writer of Interstellar, comes Jonathan Nolan to create Person of Interest, a world parallel to ours. Some would say, this show is an example of today’s big brother dominating our world. The concept centers around “The Machine.” Designed by the mysterious and wealthy Harold Finch (Micheal Emerson) to protect American citizens from relevant and dangerous threats. Brought on by Finch, John Reese (Jim Caviezel) is the handsome ex-CIA strong-arm in the twosome. With the basic set up of good verse evil, this show intrigues the audience to blur the line by doing what every it takes to protect the good. Society tries to teach that choices are black and white, though there are some who have the capacity to evolve. Can you decipher what is right and what is wrong or is there ever a real choice? Watch the first three seasons of Person of Interest on Netflix to find out.
And the winners are…. Tonight is the finale so you are not going to want to miss this. After a full summer of competing, there will be one male winner and one female winner tonight. The top four contestants are all deserving of the title but only two can win the $100,000 grand total. For this grand finale, the special guest was Paula Abdul and her hair. It was hard for any part of me to be able to listen to her talk because I was distracted by her frizzed hair. Other than that, the episode was great and included the judges favorite dances of the season. One of my personal favorite all-stars, Twitch, is not only a judge tonight but performs with finalist Fik-Shun. For all you ultimate fans, it’s been announced So You Think You Can Dance has been renewed for a Season Eleven!
Directors: Jake Kasdan, Judd Apatow, etc. Screenwriters: Paul Feig, Judd Apatow, Mike White, etc. Genre: Comedy
This comedy show only ran from 1999 until 2000 but has a huge fan base, probably because it is one of the best comedy television series to be on TV. James Franco, Linda Cardellini, Seth Rogen, and Jason Segel star in this tribute to the outcasts of high school. These stars are all well known today for their starring roles in comedies such as This is The End, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Knocked Up. But this is where they got their start. The storyline takes place during the 80’s and centers around two very different high school cliques, the freaks and the geeks. The show follows their hilarious blunders in trying to fit in, trying NOT to fit in, and growing up. Amidst their amusing slip-ups are real life lessons about making mistakes, family, and love. All of the actors do an amazing job in portraying the teenage angst that everyone experiences during the rough years of high school. Be expecting to see some famailar faces if you check it out, including a very young Shia LaBeouf in one episode. Unfortunately the show only aired for one season, but lucky for us – it’s on netflix! And that is why it’s one of our NETFLIX WHAT TO WATCH.
Directors: Deran Sarafian, T.J. Scott, David Semel, David Straiton Screenwriters: Brian McGreevy, Lee Shipman, Daniel Paige, Mark Verheiden Genre: Horror, Thriller
Recently Netflix has started producing its own television series. With the success of House of Cards comes the horror mystery Hemlock Grove. Enticing as the trailer was, the series was a bit of a let down. Even though there was a top billing cast with Famke Janssen (X-Men) and Swedish new comer Bill Skarsgard (Simple Simon), it seemed as if something was off. The longing looks and the long pauses created an awkward finished product. The gorgeous Landon Liboiron (Terra Nova) was absolutely fantastic in his performance. Forewarning though, the werewolf transformation scene was gruesome and practically left nothing to the imagination. Therefore this show is not for the lighthearted with brutal murders and intense rape scenes. With werewolves, vampires, and angels, oh my!, it certainly has epic moments. Comparing it to other television shows, it is definitely a level up from Twilight in intensity and lacking Supernatural’s brute strength. For anyone who is looking to kill some time, maybe on a lazy rainy Saturday, this show might be what you need. Only to blow off some time, Hemlock Grove is not worth much more. A pro with the Netflix series is the instant gratification of having access to the whole show with the click of a button. So bring on that long afternoon.
